Clip

On the Design tab, in the Editing group: Click the Clip tool, or select an option from the Clip tool menu, to clip the open or closed strings in a Vizex display layer.

When open strings are used as clipping objects, the direction of those strings is important:

  • Select Clip External Strings to clip string segments on the left-hand side of the clipping strings (keep string segments on the right-hand side). When using a polygon or wireframe as the clipping object, this option will clip string segments that fall outside the clipping object (keep internal string segments).
  • Select Clip Internal Strings to clip string segments on the right-hand side of the clipping strings (keep string segments on the left-hand side). When using a polygon or wireframe as the clipping object, this option will clip string segments that fall inside the clipping object (keep external string segments)
  • If no strings are selected, the Selection Assistant will prompt you to select the strings you want to clip. You will then be prompted to select the object or objects that will be used to clip the strings.

  • Select Clip Polygon to clip one or more closed strings (polygons). When you clip a closed string, the clipped string is also closed.
  • Which portion of the closed strings are clipped will depend on the direction of the clipping string. The clipped polygons to the right of the clipping string are retained.

If no polygons are selected, the Selection Assistant will prompt you to select the polygons you want to clip. You will then be prompted to select the clipping string that will be used to clip the polygons.

The end points of the clipping string must NOT be inside the polygons being clipped.

You can clip the strings or polygons in any layer, not just the active layer.

  • On the Design tab, in the Utilities group, select Clip | Clip to Polygon to isolate strings that are inside or outside a given polygon. While the interactive clipping function uses the viewing plane to define how the clipping is performed, in this case a "best fit data plane" is calculated from the clipping polygon (if there are multiple polygons then the first is used).

  • On the Design tab, in the Utilities group, select Clip | Clip to Wireframe to isolate strings that are inside or outside a given wireframe.

Tip: On the Design tab, in the Polygon Tools group:, you can also use the Trim Strings tool to trim strings using a selected cutting edge string.
