Pointer Mode

On the Vizex tab, in the Pointer Mode group, you can switch between the following cursor modes.

A subset of these tools are also available on Home tab.

  • Use the Select tool to select or edit objects in the display. Use the CTRL key to select multiple objects. Use the SHIFT key to start a Lasso selection.

    Select tool arrow icon

  • Window and Cross Window modes are supported when you define a selection rectangle, or choose a Lasso or Polygon selection mode:

To make a Window selection, define a selection rectangle from left to right: Click the first point of the rectangle and drag and release the mouse to define a second point to the right of the first point. This will select all elements completely inside the selection rectangle.

If you define a selection rectangle from right to left, it will be a Cross Window selection.

To make a Cross Window selection, define a selection rectangle from right to left: Click the first point of the rectangle and drag and release the mouse to define a second point to the left of the first point. This will select all elements inside AND intersecting the selection rectangle.

If you define a selection rectangle from left to right, it will be a Window selection.

  • Select | Polygon Selection to interactively digitise a new closed string to select objects inside it.

  • Select | Lasso Selection to enter Lasso selection mode. Alternatively, to enter Lasso mode, hold down the SHIFT key as you click and drag the mouse to make a selection.

Click and drag the mouse to define the direction and the extent of the lasso. Window mode and Cross Window mode are supported, depending on the direction in which the lasso is dragged.

Note that Lasso selection is a "one-shot" mode and is automatically turned off once the selection has been made.

  • Using SHIFT + Selection to restrict the current selection to the active layer, will only work for single-click selections. To restrict multiple selections to the active layer, select Restrict to Active Layer from the right-click Selection menu.

    Pan tool hand icon

  • Click Pan and then click and drag the mouse to pan the view in the direction you move the cursor.

Panning can also be achieved by holding down the middle mouse button or wheel as you drag the mouse. If a middle mouse button or wheel is unavailable, a Shift + Right Mouse click shortcut can be used.

If you hold down the CTRL key, you can use the Pan tool to zoom in and out. Drag the cursor down to zoom in, or up to zoom out. If you hold the Shift key down, you can use the Pan tool to rotate display objects in 3D.

  • On the Vizex tab of the Options | System | System Options form, a Pan animation check box allows you to enable or disable Pan animation.

If Pan animation is enabled, and you release the mouse button while moving the mouse and panning the display, the display will continue to pan until you interrupt it. Pan animation can be interrupted at any time, by clicking the mouse in the display, or by pressing the ESC key.

  • Click Rotate to rotate display objects in 3D (a Right mouse button click and drag shortcut can also be used).

  • The axis rotation for the Rotate tool can be restricted to a single axis. This is achieved by holding down the x,y,z or u,v,w keys when rotating.

    • X, Y, Z will rotate about the spatial x,y,z axis.
    • U, V, W will rotate about the camera x,y,z axis.

If you have a touch-enabled device, you can also use Touch Gestures to manipulate the display.

  • Click Zoom to click and drag to define a zoom box, or click once to zoom in with the cursor location as the new centre.

  • Click Seek to activate or deactivate Seek mode.

  • Click Measure to activate or deactivate Measure mode. When Measure mode is enabled, you can use the mouse cursor to measure the distance between two or more points digitised on screen.
