Laboratory Methods

Execute Configuration Manager | Metadata | Sample Tracker Metadata and select the Lab Method option to manage the lab methods used by a laboratory.

There are a finite number of ways in which an assay for a specific commodity can be performed. However, there is no standard coding system in use at laboratories to represent these methods. Each individual laboratory uses its own coding system, resulting in a proliferation of codes that are difficult to manage.

In an attempt to resolve this problem Sample Tracker uses a mapping system, whereby the original method codes used by laboratories are mapped to a set of common, generic method codes.

For example, suppose LabA uses the code XXX for a given method, while LabB uses the code YYY for exactly the same method. Within Sample Tracker these are both mapped to a single generic code (say AAA) and assay results are stored against the generic code (rather than the lab codes).

Laboratory

When you use the drop-down control to select a laboratory, the lab methods that have been setup for that laboratory (if any) are shown in the Lab Method grid:

Lab Method

To add a lab method, select New | Lab Method from the ribbon menu. You can also use the tools on the local toolbar to manage the items in the grid:

Add a new item to the list.

Properties: view or edit the item currently selected in the list.

Delete the item currently selected in the list.

When you add, edit, or remove metadata items, you can click the Refresh button on the ribbon to commit those changes to the underlying database and refresh the Metadata view to show the changes you have made.

New

Click the Add button to add a new lab method to the list of methods:

Laboratory ID

The identifier of the laboratory that performed the analyses.

Lab Method

The original lab method code (as opposed to the generic method code). See Lab Methods versus Generic Methods.

Generic method

The generic method code (as opposed to the original lab method code).

Lab Digest and Determination

A generic method code comprises two (Digest and the Determination) parts which identify the preparation and measurement components of the method.

Remarks

A short description of the preparation and measurement components of the generic method.
