File Sharing and Accessibility

There are certain rules that govern the accessibility of files that are open across a shared network or open across multiple Vizex instances.

These restrictions ONLY affect a file which is opened in multiple instances of the application. Within the same instance it is still possible, for example, to edit a file which is open simultaneously in Vizex and the File Editor.

The following points should be noted:

  1. If a file is opened for viewing, editing that file is impossible. If you need to edit the file, make sure it is not open in other instances of the application.
  2. If the file is locked, it cannot be opened for viewing.

  3. If a file is not modified, it is not locked. If changes are saved, the lock is removed from the file.
  4. If a shape is selected as the active layer in Vizex, the corresponding file is locked. Saving changes for the file will not remove the lock.
Active Layer Edited Write Lock
Yes Yes Yes
Yes No Yes
No No No
No Yes Yes

Rules for the statements 1. and 2. above are applied so they don't cancel each other.

For example, if a file is open in Vizex as the active layer and has unsaved changes, and is also open in the editor, unselecting it as the active layer will not remove the write lock. Similarly, if a file is the active layer and is opened in the editor, saving changes in the editor will not remove the lock.

File Editor: Passive Edit mode

If a file is open in the editor, but no changes have been made, no lock is in place. Other users may open the file for viewing.

Once changes are made to the file in the editor, a lock is obtained. If the editor is unable to lock the file due to a conflict, it switches to view mode and [Read-only] is added to the title in the editor.

Saving changes to the file releases the lock.
