Least Squares

In terms of resection: Observing horizontal directions to 3 known points (from an unknown point) will determine a unique solution. If 4 (or more) known points are observed then there are redundant measurements.

When additional observations are made beyond those required to calculate a solution, some method of adjustment is required. Least Squares provides the most probable solution for a given set of observations.
